How about instead of dismissing the party as being shitty, you throw some alcohol down your neck and socialise? There is nothing stopping you talking to people you don't know.

I've been doing a lot of stuff like going to parties where I know I won't know anyone because if it ends up being shitty I can just be the guy in the corner checking his phone. If you check it while talking to someone you're just being an asshole.

i should probably specify that i'm going to the parties with the intent of networking. when the person/people i want to talk to/exchange information with haven't shown up and nothing interesting is going on is when the phone comes out.
