  I just played with the land tool and grid tiles in increments. Perhaps the best example is the land extending outward from the mountain on the lower right. There, each lower level of land is exactly 1 tile longer than the higher land before it until the land reaches the bottom. Most of the land is strictly governed by rules to form specific shapes, but everything is basic and simple.
