General Chat / Smoking..

So i went on my skiing trip, smoked like mad. I Snowboard and i smoked during lifts (whatever kind, really) after lifts, whatever. Let alone when i got to the bar there.. A friend of mine who's been smoking from 14-26 had tried to quit before (lasted three weeks) said he'd quit after the vacation. I decided i would quit with him, he said he didn't see my chances very high and when the moment 'after the vacation' actually came i started agreeing with him. I had my potentially last sig out of the bus at 9.30 sunday morning. This afternoon i felt depressed, nervous, and i kept eating, and eating, and eating. I stumbled out of the house for sigarets and had one, which tasted foul as if it were my first. I just had a second which tasted lovely, but i put it out. That i want to quit is becoming more clear to me, and that i have to tell people about it the more clearer but i've been oh so reluctant to tell people. When people reminded me that sunday morning i was like, oh shit. I thought, well, just a month? Now i know i really have to put this chapter behind me for good, somehow. Tommorrow is going to be hell, since i've got a lot to do, will be in a bar at the end of midday, beginning of the evening, and the night, at college, walking towards busses, ferries, so many places i smoke at >_<.

The reason i'm posting this here is that i'm quite sure other people here have had similar experiences, and this whole telling people should start somewhere, right? I really ought to tell my parents in a second, i really need to make this whole decision definite. I want to smell better, i want to never feel the urge to buy sigarets in the middle of the night (and do so, actually), i want to taste my food better without the overdosis of salt on it. I want to become healthier, gear my sports up again.

So yeah, i'm going to do this. Has anyone else tried this recently/ever. Or is someone willing to attempt this in the near future as well?

I feel like shit now btw, i've eaten so much food today it's mesmerizing. And i need to smoke nothing at all. I guess in two weeks i'll hopefully be out of it :p.

This is, btw, a thought that has just *really* occured to me. I've been smoking because it made me feel free and like i didn't care but the addiction really hit and made me feel dependant (which is quite the opposite of free). If there's one thing i *really* don't like about smoking, it's how i've become addicted to feel good. It tastes good only half the time anyways, and i don't know why you would want to smoke first thing in the morning.

So yeah, my head is spinning is anyone elses?

Here in the states (or Ohio anyway), there are public numbers available to help you quit.
Try looking for something along those lines, I'm sure they'll have better advice than what you might find here.

I've never smoked myself, but I know several people who have kicked it after a long time. You can do it, but it will obviously take alot of effort and committment. Eating isn't a good replacement, as you noticed. Try to find something though, to replace the time you'd normally spend smoking/getting cigarettes. Music, friends, games, maybe you enjoy drawing, working out, or playing a musical instrument.

I have no experience in quitting, but my best advice is to find something to replace the habit.
Whenever you get a crave, force yourself to do whatever your new habit will be.

I think you're taking the right approach, Evil. Good luck with it.

If you find yourself needing something to replace smoking, try Dum-Dum suckers. That's what my boss uses. You can get giant bags for the price of a pack of smokes.

My dad quit a year ago for new years, after smoking cigarettes literally most of his life. He's now 51, and had been smoking since the age of 19. He's managed it, although he has gained a lot of weight since quitting, as like you he filled up the cravings with eating. If you can fill up the cravings with something else, a hobby or suchlike, so much the better, but to be honest I wouldn't worry that much about the eating. Overeating will be far less harmful to you in the long run (provided you keep it in check with sports, something my dad didn't do), and so I don't think it's that big a deal.

Anyway, best of luck to you, I personally have no experience, but I know this must be hard.

Young people smoking makes me sick (no pun intended). Can you do something more stupid? I mean your paying to make yourself sick! I have no respect for them, tho older people were not aware of the risk so I cut them some slack.

I hope you quit, good luck with it Mark.

^ But many if not most young kids that smoke, do it because they see their older friends doing it, and think it's the cool thing to do. So i don't think in a sense, you can say that young people smoking makes you sick, but older people doesn't? If you know what i mean.

Best of luck to you. I wish I could get my brother and sister to make the same decision.

Go see a hypnotist, Evil. My mother, grandfather and grandmother all saw one and he hypnotized them to stop smoking. They've been off it for about 4 years, with the occasional craving, but it's mild. The only downside to all of it was that my grandmother was diagnosed with lung cancer a year after the hypnosis and had to have a lung removed. So yeah, not entirely sure if thats what you're into but going by my imediate family's experience I'm guessing it actually works. Good luck, Mark. :)

Let's refrain from the personal attacks please, Kumba.

Anyway. Try smoking a joint or two a day. Sounds crazy I know! But substituting marijuana for nicotine might work. And then, marijuana is easier to quit. So, there's that. I have no idea if this would work, or if this is even a good idea, but it sounds good in my head.

^Please tell me you're not asking him to go from a bad drug that's legal to a bad drug that's illegal and worse for you.
  • Lloyd%s's Photo
I'm actually with Jelly on this one. ^ If you just smoked the occasional joint every day for a month, it's no worse for you then 20 fags a day. Good theory.

Probably works out better on paper though then it does in reality :p

You're far too young to understand. Go back to playing with your building blocks and legos. Did you really just say marijuana is worse for you than cigarettes??? Marijuana is probably 1/100th as bad for you as cigarretes are...MJ is not addictive (At least not chemically speaking), doesnt harm your lungs like nicotine, and hasnt been proven to have any bad effects to the body...compare that to cigarrettes, which are highly addictive, cause cancer, and can affect various parts of your body in a very negative manner. And dont give me the marijuana is a gateway drug argument...thats just a myth to keep big tobacco running and keep weed illegal....marijuana is no more a gateway drug than cigs or alchohol, and if it were legalized Im willing to bet it would become even less of a gateway drug....but oh well, you'll figure all this out for yourself when you grow up in the (distant) future.

Marijuana is so much less unhealthy for you its rediculous, and I actually think Jelly makes a good point. I know friends (loose usage of the term) who quit smoking in this way before...it may have just been them psychologically think it would work that made it work though.

And Im glad to hear you've decided to quit Evil. its quite a task but you're making the right decision and wont regret it 10 years down the road. :)
  • Midnight Aurora%s's Photo
Also, WME is not American, and Marijuana is not illegal where he is from. But really, I'm not surprised at all the that Jelly offered that solution up.
  • hpg%s's Photo
    eman nailed it.

As for Jelly's idea, quite a few people I know get a craving for a cig after a joint, in which case the idea would certainly backfire.

On a related note, happy 4/20 next friday. :)
  • Jellybones%s's Photo
Well in all fairness I'm not trying to say marijuana is healthy for you, I've heard all sorts of conflicting things but I'm thinking a joint is probably about as bad for you as a cigarette is. My thinking is that it's easier to kick a marijuana habit than a tobacco habit. Or if you're still addicted, you can always switch from joints to smoking out of a bubbler (which I think is healthier) or even a vaporizer (which I know is healthier). Sure it's a completely psychological means of quitting smoking but hey it might work. Besides, marijuana highs are much more fun than cigarette...buzzes? I don't know what you call those. Although you can't just walk out of work and smoke a joint. Well you can legally in the Netherlands but that might put a damper on your productivity, which would be bad. I don't know about that cigarette thing, I've smoked weed entirely too much ever since this semester started and I haven't had a craving for a cigarette. Then again when I'm stoned my ultimate desire is just to sit in a dark room listening to music and watching the iTunes visualizer. And eating. So that won't help your eating issues any, WME.

zodiac: Get the fuck off my board, seriously. Your mother probably doesn't want you on the Internet unsupervised anyway.

hpg: I'm probably not going to smoke on 4/20 just to make sure that I have as little in common as possible with the idiot trustafarians and frat-boys that make a big deal about it. And while I think marijuana legalization is outrageously sensible, I don't care enough to hold a sign outside and smoke a joint just to stick it to the man. I'll leave that type of thing to the people at UVM down the street. Thanks for the sentiment though.
  • tracidEdge%s's Photo
get some nice spearmint gum. i certainly smells better!

also zodiac you're a retard kthx
  • hpg%s's Photo
Haha, CoverFlow in iTunes 7 is endlessly amusing when stoned. I could sit for hours and scroll back and forth through my albums.

Back on topic however, I don't think I know anyone who was able to quit without any nicotine patch or something of the like... it sucks they have to make those things so fucking expensive though.
  • lucas92%s's Photo
^Hum, the main problem with marijuana is the price. Marijuana must be much more expensive than those toxic bombs filled with nicotine.

I know some people witch are using marijuana for medical use. In this way, it is legal. Thought, I don't suggest you to take marijuana, unless you have some cash to spend on...

Good luck with what you're going for Evil WME. My grandfather and grandmother are smoking and they smell pretty bad. Never smoked of my life, I just don't have any reason to start poisoning my life...
