It might just be my location, but it seems like less and less people are smoking (cigarettes at least). When I was in high school, the only kids that smoked were the 'troubled' ones.....it was sort of looked down upon. So are cigarettes on their last leg or what?Edited by Genius638, 09 April 2007 - 08:03 PM.

My Dad used to then when he found out he was having kids he quit over night. I have smoked but never that much. I know i don't need it so why should i bother. Good luck though, im sure you can do it because you seem pretty set on it. -

Cigars are where it's at. I haven't smoked weed because I know I'll come to need it like I do alcohol. As for cigs, I need my lungs for my career, so that's right out.

Heh... well best of luck WME....
I've never smoked nor had any pressure or reason to smoke (I have very weak lungs and don't want to poison my life). The only people I know who smoke are older relatives and parents of friends... around here for younger kids in rural MO the big thing is chewing tobacco.... I'm one of the very few here who doesn't do that disgusting shit. I know guys my age who have their gums half eaten away already... -

Look on the bright side, OLE. The less gums they have, the better you look to the girls in your school. -

Yea the chewing tobacco thing bugs me too Ole. I have far too many friends who chew....basically our whole baseball team does, and a ton of other people too...I dont get the appeal of it at all. -

lol good point MA.... tho I wouldn't count on it =/
All of my friends but one chew and almost every guy in the highschool chews, eman. It's so bad that there are chew cans actually in trash cans at school and people chew in class... and I bet you probably have to see all the spit bottles around too.... ug -

w00t, eman is my kinda guy
Oh and, @ the topic:
If you'd like to know what's it like to quite smoking, but don't smoke... try to not jerk it for about a month, and see how you fair.
P.S. - Peer pressure is bullshit. It's a social lubricant, like alcohol, and the pressure is created by having a weak mind that must conform to shit. No, smoking feels good, that's why people do it. For some, they smoke so much that they get to the point where it doesn't feel good. In america, moderation is just a bad word though...
@ evil: hey, you know what's a good way to not quit, but not feel like shit for smoking so much? Make your own cigarrettes. I'm serious, if you roll your own, and only have maybe 1 or 2 a day, you cut out a lot of the bullshit chemicals that come in the corporate shit like marlboro, camel, etc, and you won't experience any cravings close to what you are right now (and possibly, while reading this). I'm not trying to put you off your quitting, if you are going to quit, don't do it half-assed, that's for sure... just throwing out an alternative that's worked for friends and a few instructors I've had (academy of art). And as a warning, not everything works the same for everyone, so be cautious. -

Nah, I smoked weed all the time last summer then while I was in Israel for the past 7 months, I was totally fine without any (although I had an occasional bowl/joint of hash, thats all they have there). Besides for just missing being high, weed isnt dependant at all.
As for cigarrettes (and any hard drug), I'm very strict with myself. I've only smoked one cigarrette and it was only because I had some hash and nothing to smoke it out of so I put it in a cig. As for you, I agree with the weed thing, but as someone said, it could get costly but if you have the money, go for it. -

I smoked for 36 years - nearly 300,000 cigarettes. I was also quitting for most of that time and tried various smoking programs, hypnosis, acupuncture, nicotine patch & gum, even romping miss alabama a few times a day for several months. The light finally went on when I heard a trainer say something like 'the only time I've seen smokers breathe properly is when they're smoking'.
It's very much an individual thing, like the smoking rituals are - so when I get a craving, I breathe and it leaves.
Just don't give up - whatever it takes, as messy as it gets, don't give up. -

I'm always trying to quit
Someone mentioned breathing and what I have done that has helped is to cut straws the size of cigarettes and when I want a cigarette, I smoke the straw. It simulates the act of smoking and instead of nicotine going into your lungs, you get a deep breath of fresh air....seems to calm you down enough that you don't need a smoke.
Of course on really bad days, I practically mutilate the straw by chewing on it -

I love you guys for giving me the support, and i haven't smoked all day (it's now 4 am). Another friend of mine is going to quit tommorrow!
I can't believe how hard it was today, especially at 8am, leiden CS, damn. I just missed the train and i had to wait 13 minutes and i was so concious about not smoking, nervously moving my body noting everyone smoking errghh..
All the stories i can tell now are limited, cutting one addiction seemingly means leaving another intact.
For that reason i won't go into the weed thing, though i can tell with great confidence it is not an option for me, but IS an option for a LOT of other people. bleh. I wonder how i'm going to feel when i actually do wake up tommorrow.

What i wanted to reply about weed, is that it helps for some people. Some people smoke a joint and hate the thought of sigarets afterwards. For me it has always been quite the opposite. Me, stoned, craves like mad and when i get that sigaret in my mouth i love it to death. Everything always seems to be just that little bit better, stoned. Other friends of mine have told me one joint a day keeps them off sigarets, though. So the opposite exists, it's just not my personal case.
It's quite amazing, i woke up today after sleeping possibly four hours or so. I feel quite the headache, as i should, but i really felt strangely fit waking up. Cleansed or something. This no smoking thing seems to be a keeper. :) And i *think* my cravings are becoming less, too!

To those who said weed does no damage I belive there is more evidence suggesting that it can cause schizophrenia and there are a lot of calls in the UK to move it from a class C drug back to a class B. Although I think the risk of having mental problems off it can depend on person to person. So I guess it can be safer than fags. Never done it myself I find booze is good enough anyway.
Personally I used to casually smoke and toke fags (I still do sometimes when pissed.) But I got put off when I had too much to drink and I was sick all the next day and I could still taste tobacco which was horrible so I now only rarely toke while pissed. So I dunno maybe if you had so many cigs that you were sick (if this is possible) it might put you off. But I dunno. One of my mates does rollies which probs helps he also finds rolling them relaxing so that's an added bonus. I'd say you should set yourself targets so maybe aim to go down to 10 by the end of this month then 5 by the end of next month. -

That's really interesting, how many do you suggest?
..
Oh, still nothing >_<. Woohoo! -

Hmm dunno I was mainly sick because of too much booze but the fact I could still taste fags made it worse. I dunno for someone who smokes often it would probably take a lot of ciggies to put you off and I've never heard of anyone trying it. I also wasn't exactly smoking often just casually. I probably would've started if I wasn't put off though. That's really interesting, how many do you suggest?
I know in the UK you can get free patches but I don't know about Holland though. Another thing to try could be not to buy your own fags and just scav them off other people this would be an easy way to have less although it would annoy a lot of people as well. -

That works too, actually. My roommate quit smoking by quitting buying cigarettes--he cut down on his dosage as his packs ran out, then he bummed them off other people for a bit, and now he's done. Of course, he does get stoned every night (either by joint, bubbler, vaporizer, or some combination thereof). -

congrats to you wme.
I hope it will really work for you.
luckly I've got a car crash once which damaged my eyes a bit and caused a allergic to smoke in my eyes ... so I will never be persuated to smoke ....
good luck for the rest of the week.

And anyway, nobody knows what exactly causes schizophrenia, regardless of what tests show. It requires a physical change in the size and/or compostion of the brain, so unless the subject started smoking at a very young age, I doubt that's going to occur. Overuse of some drugs, such as alcohol, can give some symptoms of schizophrenia, but only after MANY years of abuse.
