General Chat / Coolest City you have ever visited?

The coolest place I've visited is Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It has such a warm and quiet atmosphere. The old town with the famous bridge has so many alleys and elevation changes. The people there are so welcoming and the food is ace. Only good memories connected to this city.

I couldn't disagree more, I thought Mostar was rubbish! Yes, its got a really lovely bridge and in the 200 meters leading up the bridge are some pretty buildings (filled with tacky shops and rubbish restaurants). Otherwise its a really small town with some ugly buildings and average surroundings, nothing really to do there except a couple gross bars. Sarajevo, on the other hand, was just filled with such diverse culture and history and atmosphere, it was such a cool city just to spend time in. And the food in Mostar was mostly more touristy versions of the stuff I got in Sarajevo.

Sarajevo may be my favorite place in southeastern europe, although there are quite a few cool places. I also thought Budapest was pretty ace

Depressing shithole? Where the hell did you get that impression? Then again, being a skateboarder, depressing shitholes are kinda my native habitat.

It's just one big, tacky tourist trap with shitty casinos and "museums". And once you leave the trap it's just shacks (of which half are abandoned) and shady motels. The falls themselves were cool but when we had seen those we got the hell out of there.

Cocoa, yeah you might be right about the surroundings, it is very industrial. I think I'm a bit biased as we went there in the evening after an 8 or 9 hour drive and the city fulfilled everything we desired at that specific moment (calmness, no heat and good food) :D However even on the next day it did not disappoint us. What you say about the food is what we experienced exactly the other way round.

With Sarajevo you are right indeed. It is also a cool city. The most astonishing point is the border between the 'western' area with 18th century buildings like in Vienna and the oriental part with the small houses and mosques. Culturally a very interesting and diverse city.  What I felt a little 'uncomfortable' about were the remains and signs of the war that you can see everywhere in the country. But it's interesting to see how the people try to deal with their past there.

For me I loved Mostar. But not because of the bridge or the town itself. It was more the history. We did a tour around the town with a local guide and it really hit home the war was during my life time. The discarded sniper shells at the top of the abandoned bank. seeing the apartment building where the bottom floors are still abandoned after a mortar strike took out the wall but the top floor is lived in.

It all really hit home. Especially after i got home and saw the video of the croats destroying the bridge.

Sure it's not the prettiest or most atmospheric city in the world. But the ability to see the history of that conflict in first person and such visceral detail was something I've never got anywhere else. Sarajevo had its fare share of the same but not on the same level as Mostar

Yeah its probably better with a guide, but I felt much more of the war in Sarajevo. The thing I remember the most was that literally every park in the city is also filled with gravestones now because there was nowhere else to bury people during the siege, and they can't have fireworks now because it sounds too much like explosions.

We were reading a lot about it when we were there and at night in a bar (a little bit tipsy) one of my friends proclaimed that he "hated serbians" to which the waitress replied "I'm a serbian"

    awkward moment indeed :p

In about a week setting off to Rome. Any tips from the people that already visited? (and no need to suggest the Colloseum or Forum Romanum :p  )

Don't let your mood get ruined by annoying dudes trying to sell you stuff.

I suggest you to visit the Piazza Navone, It's my favorite part of Rome. Nearby is the Gelateria Della Palma, also a must-see. Try it out, it has over 150 flavours of ice cream!

  • FredD%s's Photo

Piazza Navone was already on my list. Thanks for the Gelateria tip, how can there even exist 150 flavors of ice cream :o

Don't miss Pantheon. I was really impressed by it! Probably the thing I liked most during my brief visit to Rome.

If Colosseum was a ride in RCT it would have the lowest "satisfaction" score ever due to the queue lenght...

I bought my ticket in advance, as well for the Vatican Museum.

    You completely dodging Germany? :(

Whoops, that list was just off the top of my head but I have no idea why I skipped over Germany. Frankfurt and Berlin were my top picks, all depends on how much I can fit into my schedule. The current list is very ambitious..

@Faas noted, I wasn't too attached to the Brussels idea anyway so that helps. :)

When I was in New Orleans I hated it.

I'm really wanting to go back now.

I visited Florence on Monday. What an amazing city. It really surprised me how much there is to see. I would say it feels like a more compact version of Rome. We were there for only one day, but you definitely need five days to see most highlights. There is an architectural or cultural masterpiece on every street corner, causing us to only see the city centre. There wasn't even time to visit a single of its world leading museums. I will surely come back to see the rest.

  • mintliqueur%s's Photo

^Yeah, I definitely prefer Florence to Rome. I felt it was a lot calmer, more relaxed, and therefore more pleasant. Less traffic. You should definitely pay a visit to the Uffizi if you're interested in Renaissance art. And don't forget some of the churches, where you can view some heavy art historical classics (in particular the Santa Maria Novella church, close to the railway station).

I'm going to Vegas for a couple days in June. Any recommendations? Obviously going to try and hit Circus Circus

To be honest, skip Circus Circus, there are better things to do with your time in the area than go to a washed up casino and ride a shitty arrow.  Perhaps the S&S, uhhh, thing, is worth it, but otherwise meh.  Go to the Grand Canyon Skywalk if you're willing to pay, the Hover Dam and Red Rock Canyon are worth seeing as well.  If you really want to go on some rides, the top of the stratosphere is probably a better option.

the SS is decent, but really all you have to do is hit the two coasters and you can leave.

I am currently in Shanghai for a few months - and it is pretty amazing here :)
