I've never listened to rap so I wouldn't know the difference between good or bad. I like instrumental music so that means I bend towards rock, funk, jazz, blues, whatever. I love the sound of guitars so that also makes me a rock person. I have a lot of respect for rap and hip hop though. Well, for the music anyway. I respect musical artists but I don't respect singers/bands/rappers that only make music to sell records. There are plenty of both types in rap and rock. -

I was just wondering about this. I don't consider myself a Linkin Park fan but I do like this one song from their remix album called FRGT/10. It's a rap song so I'm wondering what you rap fans can tell me about that song (if you've even heard it). Would you consider it very good? I don't know why I like it actually. It's cinematic I guess. -

To start, most rap fans don't recognize Linkin Park, or Limp Bizkit or any rap/rock group as rap. However, I do enjoy some stuff that Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit create ("Creamer" is great). Being that I have never heard the song you that mentioned Coaster Ed, I did download it. As far as a rap song, it's not that great. The beat is fairly average, the chorus is fairly annoying and the guy's (sorry, not on the up and up of Linkin Park members) flow is very poor. Just my opinion. -

Linkin Park is not rap I know. I called that a rap song though because it's a remix. The guy(s) rapping are not in the band. Nothing else by Linkin Park would really qualify as rap, but I thought that song would. Since I do like that song I was wondering if I would like some other rap songs. Maybe you could recommend something I might like based on that? Unless that woud be beneath you... -

Well, if you have the time I would suggest you check out the songs I posted links to. 2pac-Changes, K-Os- Follow Me. Those are just some songs I think you should check out, but they aren't similar to the Linkin Park song. Relative to the Linkin Park song, I would suggest: "Why Me" by Cuban Linx. There are other songs that escape me at this time. But if you like that one I can suggest more.Maybe you could recommend something I might like based on that? Unless that woud be beneath you...

But if how good music is was based on its popularity then rap might actually be good. Thats just downright scary. -

Me too. Joe Satriani has to be the most talented guitarist since VanHalen. Personally I am an oddity for my age. I'm 15 and I'm into classic rock as much or even more than people 2 and 3 times my age. Pink Floyd in particular. Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, Ac/Dc, Ted Nugent, VanHalen, I am sorry but nothing new can begin to match these artists. Sure Stained is good, A Perfect Circle isn't bad, 3 Doors Down holds their own and Audioslave seems promissing. Oh yeah, Creed too.I listen to john petrucci, steve vai, joe satriani... you know, talent.
Even so the golden age of music was the 70s. There was never a time when all musical types (except rap) had success all at the same moment. I pray that our generation (all of us in our teens at the moment) can/will turn music around. Bring back space/progressive rock, make the classic style return and let the old bands still touring (AeroSmith etc.) retire, like they would've been able to if able artist has stepped foreward.
I need to get a Guitar and/or a Bass before I get out of high school.
Let the revolution begin.

ps: to Natelox, I have no idea what real rap is. I know only what I've heard on the radio so I'm downloading those files of your now. I may be suprised, and since I have an open mind, who knows. -

Staind, 3 Doors Down, and Audioslave are not really representative of what this generation has to offer. Yeah classic music is great but I'd hate to think you dismissed everything in modern rock without listening to the Smashing Pumpkins, Dinosaur Jr., Radiohead, Tool, Queens of the Stone Age, among others. Those are just the well-known bands. There are countless obscure indie bands out there producing great original music every day. Don't give up on new music yet. If you look for it, you'll find it. Of course the classics deserve repeat listens but finding new music keeps that brain of yours stretching in new directions.
Nate, I listened to those tracks you suggested. I figured it was mostly a psychological disposition that kept me from listening to rap since I typically just change the station whenever a rap song comes on without giving it a chance. That and a lot of the rap I heard was the popular radio kind which is probably the equivalent of judging modern rock on Limp Bizkit, Korn, and the like as if that's all there is. Well I listened to the two Kamau clips you posted, "Follow Me" and "Heaven Only Knows" by K-Os, and "Why Me" by Cuban Link. There's certainly a lot more variety than I ever gave rap music credit for just in these few tracks. I liked the two Kamau tracks the best even though they weren't the full songs. The beat didn't overpower the words and the lyrics were interesting. "Why Me" is the closest to what I usually think of as rap music. It did have an appealing beat to it. Less interesting than some of the other tracks though, I'd probably get bored of it sooner. The two K-Os tracks took a little getting used to. I didn't like the chorus sections, just the quality of the voice didn't appeal to me, but the verses were entertaining from the lyrics I could pick out. I tried to listen to "Changes" (is it Tupac or 2pac?) but I couldn't find a copy that wasn't corrupted.
It seems to me most people start out listening to either rap or rock and never cross over and there's really no reason why it has to be one or the other. These rap songs are really quite good. A nice guitar solo every now and then would be cool, but I could get use to this. There was a time when I thought hard rock music was shit too but I came to like that. I'll try to be more open-minded about rap music too. -

*just listened to the kamau tracks*
well... it's not that I hate rap, it's that I find it boring. It's like there is nothing there. No real melody, and a simple beat that repeats itself a ridiculous amount of times (the end of oldsoul surprised me though, it actually changed). On top of that, the only talent that really goes into it is the lyrics. Beats don't take much skill to come up with, it's like being handy with a graphics program, once you know what to do, it ain't that hard. It's very minimal musical writing, and the focus is definitely on the lyrics and the flow of the lyrics (which in themselves aren't very appealing to me, it seems very monotone, and non-melodic, and they all seem to say their words with the exact same kind of heavy lipped emphasis). Infact, that's my biggest complaint: the melody is completely disreguarded as secondary. If I really wanted to know his "stance" or convictions on something, I'd read his book.
I need melody. The way rappers say things isn't "beautiful" for the most part, which is what I look for in vocals.
Sorry if I come off as ignorant, but that's what I have seen even after listening to kamau.
... anyone else find it funny that people who like eminem tend to not like other rap, and people who like rap tend not to like eminem? -

I'd rather listen to Aerosmith over all Music, not being a favorite of mine rap itself and Eminem ruined my whole look on rap so I say its Crap.
I listen to rock and techno. Thats mostly it. Theres only 1 rap song I ever listened to and liked
LL Cool Jay- Old School rap- Mama Said knock you out, and it was made better by being a Coaster vid (Ninja at SFOG, I saw a Deja vu vid and such, but I forget the site. -

Excuse me? Did you just say his lyrics weren't good?*just listened to the kamau tracks*

Begging For Change:
"I'm in pursuit of change, not in pursuit of money/ Unfourtunatly money turns the world/ Corrupts and abuducts while insults are hurled"
How is that not a good lyric? Kamau is the greatest lyricist I have ever heard. As for his delivery, I find it very entertaning and easy to listen to. Concerning his beats, I guess that's just a matter of opinion, but I find them quite enjoyable. But seriously, if you don't think those lyrics are hot, there's something wrong with you.
