Description
Just kicking off the Arkham project that I'll be working on for most of the year. Macro has just been completed so I think it's important to reflect on this part of the process because it's been quite long-winded.
Macro Planning
1) Basic Map outline – Done
2) Plot Roads – Done
3) Plot key Batman landmarks – Done
4) Plot monorail – Done
5) Review elevation changes - Done
6) Height map of buildings (via land tiles) – Done
7) Understand blocked areas of content - Done
8) Plan for cutaways - Done
It's gonna be a biggy but I have been obsessing over this now for a good few months. Excited to see where this takes me. -

Yussss this is exciting!! Really cool to see some of this planning stage - defo good to get these main parts mapped out before going into detailed building (speaking from experience where it can get very messy to undo earlier bad decisions haha). Looking forward to seeing more in due course!
already looks like a 2001 spotlight
i mean it's absolutely massive, and i cannot wait to see what you cook up on a map this scale.
Oh this is gonna be epic
This is going to be fun to watch develop, This is taking Macro planning to a whole new level and Im here for it. Nice work
If there's anyone that can make something as big as this, it's you! Looking forward to the progress screens and updates!
Very cool, and a really nice presentation of this.
Just please be mindful of sightlines in those deeper urban canyons.
Geez man if you finish something of this size and scale from scratch, with the level of quality and detail you're capable of, it will quite possibly be the most impressive park ever made...
I'm all for it!! So exciting!!
Absolutely love seeing planning stuff like this, so thanks for sharing! How big is the map btw?
Agreed, I felt like I redid a few significant areas of Pixar which gave me a few good months of reworking so the idea was to put that into a solid park plan at the early stages. I've always felt my planning could be much better.
I'd love to bend your ear about streaming and recording. I'm thinking of doing a follow-along style build of Arkham and letting people see the full scale process.
Thank you pal, honestly I'm kinda scared of it but I also think that helps rise to the challenge / fear of actually starting it and all that...
Thanks Split <3
I have to follow suit with your impressive planning. Thanks pal
Thanks pal, bloody love a solo!
Completely agree here and you’re so right calling this out. This height map has allowed me to see what’s going to get blocked but also what buildings need to move to allow easier sightlines on an isometric grid. For example a skyscraper with four sides may be blocked on one side by another skyscraper towering to the side of it, here I know not to exhaust my energy on a certain orientation of a building when it’s going to be blocked naturally by the cityscape.
There are a few diagonal canyons however too which I’ve started to challenge sometimes by adding a double road/highway to give it space to breathe. Definitely a challenge that I need to get on top of for a city build.
Watch this space... I'm fully committed to this and I've been obsessing over these plans a lot so it's full steam ahead to get it going now. Outside of any potential competitions happening this will be my sole focus for now.
I've been really enjoying this part of the process, so much so it felt right to include it on the front page of NE simply because planning and macro is such a large part of a full scale solo (well hopefully). It felt like a disservice to the park to dive into aesthetics straight away.
The map is 310 x 270 so far but there's a lot of water and a few tricks I have up my sleeve to move fast with the build.
I´m all hyped up. Can´t wait to see how this beauty turns out. Loved the Arkham Trilogy. Great to see your proces setting out the macro like this!
needs more finish
I wasn't aware you knew the word 'finish' Kyle
