I feel like the problem arises when you make getting wasted or stoned a habit and allow it to consume your life. I just don't see the danger in either alcohol or marijuana if you have those occasional nights when your rage and get wasted (and don't drive of course) or get high.
I agree with Comet about the dramatic rise in marijuana use if it was legalized. I am personally a supporter of the legalization of Marijuana but there are several reasons I can't see it working in America. The first reason is the fact that there would be no way to tax it unless there is a way to rapidly commercialize the market for marijuana which I just can't see happening considering most of the current buyers and sellers have their "underground" connections and would continue to operate that way, perhaps at cheaper prices, despite its commercialization. The second reason I feel this would not succeed is coming from my perspective as an Ohioan where smoking itself is illegal in most places throughout the state. It feels like the state is trying to step away from smoking as a whole and assuming other states are making similar laws, it would be highly counterproductive to introduce a new, very popular smoking product in the midst of all this legislation that is trying to cut back on smoking. -

I find this topic interesting as well, mostly because I can relate to it. It's strange because growing up I always thought that smoking was disgusting; leaves a foul smell on your clothes and car and has no real benefits. When I was 18 I remember buying a pack just because I could and I also drank most weekends with my buddies and smoked pot, too.
I stopped smoking pot and drinking because I didn't like where my life was headed -- it seemed like my focus was really to get through the day so I could get home and get blazed and I wanted more than that. I kept smoking cigarettes though, around a pack a day for maybe 8 months.
I didn't need nicorette gum or a patch or any of that garbage to quit, what I needed was motivation. I was motivated by my buddy when I found out that he thought less of me because I didn't quit. I quit cold turkey to prove that I could. That was almost 4 years ago now. I noticed benefits in the gym maybe 3-4 weeks after I quit, I didn't get as winded and just generally felt better. I won't go back because I see no benefits in it. If someone wants to quit I suggest stop making excuses or allowances of x amount per day or chewing gum with nicotine or anything else; just be in control and do it. That's what worked for me anyway. -

You have to be careful with the "people will smoke more if you legalize it" argument.
There is also a group of people that do drugs because they are illegal.
I quit smoking marihuana not last August, but the August before that! I don't miss it at all.
I really don't want to have children whilst smoking though. I remember always being really disgusted with smoking as a kid. Maybe I should also give it up before potential pregnancy, but the kid thing, I think, weighs enough on me to actually stop.
And Ozone, that's they way I plan on doing it. Using patches and whatnot.. feels like you give into your weakness and then expect to be strong.. I think it works best to just do it. Don't cry, be strong, bam.
Little bit later though :). -

I have to disagree with that a little bit
There are people who smoke because they want to be cool but I wouldn't say because it's illegal. If that were the case then those people would stop once it became legal, which I think is highly unlikely
inVersed, you say they wouldn't be able to tax it, why is that? Either way if you're looking for benefits of legalizing it than I'd say it'd bring down organized crime slightly because dealing wouldn't have to be done underground anymore
Also just interested, I have a question for anyone living where weed is legal. Do most people buy it through specific individual dealers or through an actual establishment like a coffee shop? And what age group tends to be most involved in the purchasing of it -

I think WME meant more people will smoke it rather than people will smoke more. Since people take legal highs just because they're legal. Im assuming it would be easy to tax aswell since a establishment could undercut the dealers easy with current prices. Think about how much it costs to produce weed compared to the huge markup. Sure people would still grow illegally and sell illegally but more people would buy from the shop rather than the dealer. Theres many reasons for this : source/quality and purity being the most important -

You are right, Comet. If you would legalise it, then the 'already' smokers would probably keep smoking. However, that is not logically inconsistent with my argument. I need to get statistics on this, but I think the American youth actually smokes more pot than us here. Anyways, illegality is definitely a factor that works both ways. Of course, if you were to change it, at first I think only more people would tend to smoke. But part of the 'fun' will also gone. (probably takes a while though, which is a problem) -

Yeah I was looking at the statistics yesterday it was something like 22% of the population there have smoked it in there lifetime and 40% here -

Since I think it is worth pointing out how wrong stereotyping can be, I met an angry pot smoker the other night. -

was he high though? -

I'm pretty sure he is continuously, but he certainly was then. I'm not an avid smoker nor do I ever intend to be, so I don't know all the etiquette involved with smoking, especially not someone who smokes non stop every day, and he was an absolute dick towards me the rest of the night for it.was he high though?

He probably was just a wanker. The more you smoke the less effect it has on you though due to tolerance. Ive known people who would smoke far more a day than i thought possible and still seemed sober -
Comet Offline
^Yeah although your sober state starts to change too when you smoke that much
I'd say if you're smoking to the point where it gets you angry that's about the point to stop -

ive never smoked, dont ever intend to, but i do know this-
The fact that you even want to quit and recognize smoking to be a bad habbit, i seriouslyu find that to be awsome. i have two friends at school who smoke weed and they dont want to stop because they like to not have a conciance. they dont drink that im aware of but they have really messed up lives just because of their smoking habbits. dude it may be hard, i know this sounds rediculous and it is cuz im ignorant but, im addicted to porn and i always have to do it when depressed or feeling hopeless. i feel like i could almost say that im just as addicted to sex as you are with smoking. so yeah, at least i have some ideah of what being addicted is like. the worst part is that ive never actually had real sex before, only look @ images while grabbing the sperm out of me. LOL! that is tmi, but you get what im saying. life sucks and we as human being need to get away from it all. im hessitant to say this for many reasons, but ill be praying for you. its the thought that copunts, right? i mean what esle can i do? not like im gonna stop porn anytime soon, how can i help somebody when i cant even help my ownbody.Edited by JoeZia, 04 March 2010 - 03:42 PM.
