Man, it's been a shitty year for big movies.

Top 3 so far would have to be:
    1. X-Men Apocalypse 8/10
    2. Star Trek Beyond 8/10
    3. Captain America Civil War 7/10

Been bad at seeing the smaller stuff, usually dont get to see those until they are on Netflix or something like that. But I honestly can't think of anything I missed that I'm dying to see.

Saw 44 films of 2016 so far and gave 22 of them a 7 or higher. Although I know I tend to be generous.

    Top 3:

    1. Everybody Wants Some!!

    2. The Nice Guys

    3. Zootropolis/Mr. Right/Eddie the Eagle/Sing Street (All equally great in their own way)

    Bottom 3:

    1. Suicide Squad

    2. The Fifth Wave

    3. Kill Your Friends/Equals/Alice Through the Looking Glass (All equally horrible in nearly the same way)

What I've been noticed, in my opinion, is that the best movies ooze fun and all seem like they're made with love while the worst movies of the year are either cash-grabs or trying to be hard too be quirky/artistic. At least more so than in 2015.

Shit, forgot about Linklater's. Definitely want to watch that one before the year ends.

Hardly seen anything this year but I got tickets to see Godzilla next month and I'm so pumped

Yeah, i didn't think there were any good films that came out in 2016 other than the Kevin Spacey Cat Movie which is just the Citizen Kane of movies

everybody wants some!!! is literally my least favorite movie I have ever watched. big call, I know. I may have actually ranted about it before in this topic, I just wanted to reinforce how atrocious it is. don't waste your life liampie.

This is kind of how I've always thought about Drive.

In addition, there's some more great stuff from 2016 I've seen. Although Everybody Wants Some!! stands as my favorite of the year.

    Magnificent Seven was superb.

Sully caught me off-guard in a way the Martian did last year. (Thought it would be good, didn't expect it to be great)

Sing Street was pretty great if you like city-musicals.

Captain Fantastic surprised me a lot too.

    My tops so far:

    The Nice Guys:

Awesome buddy-cop comedy which is best with a few friends and a few beers. Can only recommend. Better than Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang IMO.

    (8/10)

    Zootopia:

Stellar Pixar movie with some awesome attention to detail as always. Reminded me a bit of childhood cartoons like Rescue Rangers and Cpt Balu.

    (8/10)

    Deadpool:

Fun, anarchic movie with nice action and dumb story. I like the infantile humor! The R-rating is the only thing that let this movie stand out from the other superhero movies.

    (7/10)

    The Revenant:

Nice little survival porn. Poor bears. Best part of the movie were the pictures and the camera. Everything else was solid.

    (8/10)

    Hateful 8:

Another great Tarantino-flick. Liked it more than Django, not as much as Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill, but it's in the same league as Reservoir Dogs.

    (9/10)

    Hunt for the Wilderpeople:

Charming and funny little New Zealandian movie from the same director that did 'What we do in the shadows'. Kinda mix between Up and Little miss sunshine. Highly recommended.

    (9/10)

    Star Trek Beyond:

Suffers the same as the superhero movies (same-same but different). Dumb and forgettable action/sci-fi cinema that entertains.

    (6/10)

    Suicide Squad:

Don't really get the hate for this. Sure it's a stupid action flick with no story whatsoever, but to me every Avengers/Captain America/MisterSuperComicmanwhatever is as well, with very few exceptions. But it was entertaining. Sorry to all fanboys ;)

    (5/10)

    Hail, Ceasar:

Kinda strange movie but still fun. Lovely sets, style and atmosphere. The musical stuff was strange but I like the setting and awkwardness of it.

    (6/10)

Going to see Swiss Army Man tonight. Looking forward to that one.

Oh and for movie nerds: this is a great site to keep track. :)

Too bad it's not a pixar film. :p

  • Liampie%s's Photo

And it shows, although Pixar does have its sentimental moments too, Zootopia was so preachy and predictable I could barely stand it. Typical Disney stuff. Thank god it didn't have any songs other than the Shakira crap during the credits.

So Liampie, do you not like the golden age Disney films like Pocahontas, Alladin, Lion's King, etc.?

Popping in here to recommend you all Hacksaw Ridge and Arrival. Hacksaw Ridge is incredibly intense and super emotional. Arrival is incredibly intelligent and super emotional.
